Day 11: Role. Task. Format.

Share

Most prompts fail for one simple reason: they are mushy.

You ask for help, the model guesses what you meant, and then you spend the next three messages fixing the guess.

An easier structure is:

Role. Task. Format.

Role tells the model what seat to sit in.
Task tells it what job to do.
Format tells it how to hand the answer back.

Example:

Role: You're a skeptical editor.
Task: Review this draft for clarity.
Format: Give me 5 bullet points and rewrite the worst paragraph.

That is enough to make a prompt feel much sharper.

You can use the same pattern almost anywhere:

  • summarize this thread
  • rewrite this in plain English
  • compare these two options
  • turn this into a table

The point is not to make the prompt longer.
The point is to make the request legible.

If an AI answer feels vague, tighten the brief before you blame the model.
